They never really went away of course, this having been such a mild winter in the parts. This year's crop will be somewhat different due to the removal during the winter of the white thorn trees we've had at the bottom of the garden.
The first sighting happened at night sadly as I staggered home from work - a great furry beast stranded on the footpath, a leaf and a twig to transfer it to the relative safety of the shrubbery at the path's edge. Too dark for even someone knowlegable to make an identification; just another 2.5" grub on the toddle.
Next up, that evening, a miniscule beetle, black with many white or very pale dots. Lamentably inadequate reference resources at my disposal at home mean I've not a clue. Lamentably inadequate photography equipment, left me unable to take a snap.
Last night a geometer on the bathroom window all greeny-yellow with stark mud coloured markings. Camera battery out of juice from trying to photograph the beetle the previous evening.
Hopeless, hapless and back in the bug hunt.
