More wildlife from the garden

It was inevitable that I'd disturb at least one moth. This one was lurking beneath the ivy that has flourished in this mild wet summer. I hacked away most of it but left this guy his chosen cover. That's the dilemma. To tame the garden or let it run wild with the promise of a plentiful supply of subjects. Rejigging the text here, I initially posted that this in my estimation was an example of the Large Yellow Underwing. But now I'm pretty sure it isn't. I felt sure I caught a glimpse of those underwings that give the various 'yellow underwing' moths their name. So I don't know what it was, but I do know that it was much smaller than one I spotted later in the evening right before I spotted the Angle Shades.

As to this spider well, when it comes to identifying arachnids my pretensions are even fewer. So I offer it up as an example of striking markings, and also as an emblem of our shockingly disappointing summer. It has made its home on our barbecue.
